Interview curated by Sophie Benson of atmos.earth, Muhumuza Brian, and Amie Tran, conducted just two weeks before the Green Carpet Fashion Awards. Co-chaired by Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and Eco-Age co-founder Livia Firth, the Green Carpet Fashion Awards spotlight climate activists and community leaders. Just a few days ahead of the Oscars, on Wednesday, March 6, celebrities including Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and Amber Valletta will gather on a Los Angeles rooftop for a glamorous awards ceremony. But they won’t be taking home any shining statuettes. Instead, the spotlight will be keenly focused on activists and changemakers working at the intersection of environmental, social, and political change including Uganda’s Judith Heard.
Did your upbringing and childhood shape your environmental activism? Was there a specific event or issue that sparked your interest?
Growing up in a rural setting laid the foundation for my deep connection with nature and its intrinsic beauty. My Childhood memories are filled with family hikes, refreshing swims in local lakes and river streams, and explorations of the diverse forest and its wildlife. These experiences fostered a profound appreciation for the environment, shaping my worldview and instilling a sense of responsibility toward preserving the natural world.
As my awareness of environmental issues grew with age, I recognized the urgent need for collective action to address challenges like climate change, pollution, and deforestation. This realization prompted me to delve into educating myself about these critical issues and understanding their far-reaching consequences. Motivated by the desire to safeguard the environment for future generations, I began taking deliberate steps to minimize my ecological footprint.
The rural backdrop not only enriched my understanding of environmental interconnectedness but also cultivated a sense of stewardship. It underscored the importance of individual contributions in creating a sustainable future. This upbringing serves as a constant reminder of the delicate balance between human activities and the well-being of our planet, motivating me to actively engage in environmental activism.

How does your fashion career feed into your activism and vice versa?
As an African model, my fashion career and environmental activism are interconnected in several ways.
Firstly, being a model in the fashion industry allows me to amplify sustainable and ethical practices within the industry. I can use my platform to promote brands that prioritize sustainability, source materials responsibly, and support ethical labor practices. By showcasing and endorsing these brands, I can help raise awareness and encourage consumers to make more environmentally conscious choices.
Additionally, my presence in the fashion industry allows me to advocate for greater diversity and representation in the sustainable fashion movement. By highlighting African designers, artisans, and models, I can help showcase the rich cultural heritage and creativity of the continent. This not only promotes inclusivity within the industry but also emphasizes the importance of supporting local communities and traditional craftsmanship.
On the other hand, my environmental activism informs my approach to modeling and the projects I choose to be a part of. I actively seek out opportunities that align with my values and contribute to positive change in the fashion industry. Whether it’s participating in eco-friendly runway shows, collaborating with sustainable brands, or engaging in advocacy campaigns, I strive to use my voice and platform to promote environmental awareness and inspire others to adopt more sustainable practices.
Overall, my fashion career and environmental activism are intertwined in a reciprocal relationship where one influences and informs the other, allowing me to make a positive impact both within the industry and beyond.

Within Uganda, what environmental issues do you feel are particularly pressing? What do you want to draw people’s attention to?
A critical environmental challenge facing Uganda is the escalating issue of deforestation and lack of monitoring before, during and after planting trees. The country has witnessed a notable decline in its forest cover, primarily attributed to unsustainable logging for timber and fuelwood, coupled with the relentless expansion of agricultural activities.
It is imperative to underscore the urgency of addressing this concern and highlight tree planting as a paramount solution to combat deforestation and its far-reaching environmental consequences. Trees are integral to maintaining ecosystem health, serving as regulators of climate, providers of wildlife habitat, and safeguards against soil erosion.
The act of planting trees assumes a pivotal role in the restoration of degraded lands, contributing to enhanced biodiversity and serving as a powerful mitigation strategy against climate change impacts. Beyond the ecological benefits, tree planting initiatives yield positive social and economic outcomes, encompassing improved air quality, heightened water retention, and the creation of sustainable livelihoods.
My earnest appeal extends to individuals and organizations across Uganda, urging them to prioritize tree planting and engage in robust reforestation endeavors. This collective commitment is paramount in safeguarding the nation’s natural resources and ensuring a sustainable future for all its inhabitants. Through collaborative efforts to plant and nurture trees, we can not only make a positive impact on the environment but also cultivate a greener and healthier Uganda for the well-being of present and future generations.

You recently launched 50 Million Trees for Africa. How long has the campaign been in planning? And can you explain what the campaign will entail and who will be involved? (I believe you’ve already planted thousands of trees! It would be great to hear about how they’re being looked after and monitored too please)
2 Weeks ago starting in Ugandan schools, case in point at Kasangati High School in Gayaza, through my Judith Heard Foundation I planted over 10,000 signature fruit trees as part of the campaign’s kick-start and engaged with students, emphasizing the importance of conserving nature and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
This vision extends beyond mere education; she envisions a future where every child actively participates in preserving the environment. By instilling a sense of responsibility and appreciation for nature in the next generation, I believe we all can pave the way for a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence with the planet.
We then moved to the Kasangati Town Council community where I met with the Local Government Leaders and monitored the thousands of trees I planted there a year ago.

Today I am focused on a call-to-action mobilization where we are open to partner with heads of governments, leaders, international organizations, civil society activists and the general public to bring this afforestation movement to life — It’s possible to attain a greener world by 2050.
It tasks all of our families, friends and acquaintances, within our homesteads, neighborhoods, to be part of the seedling, planting and caretaking process. Moreover, we are looking for suggestions to incorporate technology for tracking the growth and impact of planted trees that adds a contemporary and transparent dimension to the campaign. This will not only ensure accountability but also allows stakeholders to witness the tangible results of their collective efforts.
The campaign kicked off with comprehensive educational workshops in participating schools, educating students on the importance of trees in combating climate change. The Foundation looks to have this curriculum integrated into existing academic structures, ensuring that environmental sustainability becomes an integral part of students’ learning experience.

Our commitment extends far beyond the act of planting. In the initial stages post-planting, our focus is on providing immediate care to ensure the trees’ survival. This includes activities such as mulching, watering, and protection from pests and diseases. We take continuous and collaborative effort to ensure the health and longevity of the trees through pruning, weeding, and pest control. We’ve implemented robust monitoring systems to regularly assess the health and progress of the planted trees.
Through field visits, surveys, and data collection, we track survival rates, growth patterns, and any potential challenges. This real-time monitoring allows us to identify issues promptly and implement targeted interventions. Through workshops and training sessions, we empower community members to take an active role in nurturing the planted trees.

Some people dismiss pageants as being all about looks. What are your thoughts on this and how have you used your title as Miss Environment Africa and Miss Elite Africa as a platform for your activism?
While it’s understandable that some people may perceive pageants as solely focused on looks, it’s crucial to recognize the multifaceted nature of these competitions. While physical appearance is one aspect, pageants also emphasize talent, intelligence, charisma, and advocacy. Throughout my journey as Miss Environment Africa (won in INdia) and Miss Elite Africa (won in Egypt), I’ve actively used my title as a platform for meaningful activism, transcending the stereotype of beauty pageants.
As Miss Elite Africa, I am determined to leverage my position to address critical issues such as education, women’s empowerment, and environmental sustainability. Far beyond the glamorous exterior, I view my role as an opportunity to advocate for positive change and amplify the voices of those who may not have the same platform.

Far beyond the glamorous exterior, I view my role as an opportunity to advocate for positive change and amplify the voices of those who may not have the same platform.
One tangible way I’m translating this commitment into action is by forging strategic partnerships with organizations like National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and National Forestry Authority (NFA) dedicated to supporting education for underprivileged children. By aligning with these groups, I aim to contribute to the advancement of educational opportunities, acknowledging that knowledge is a powerful tool for societal progress.
Additionally, my title empowers me to champion gender equality, recognizing the importance of fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers for women. I plan to collaborate with organizations that share this vision, working towards a future where every individual, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities and rights.

Environmental conservation is another area where my activism takes a tangible form. I am actively advocating for sustainable practices and the preservation of our planet. Whether participating in tree-planting campaigns, supporting eco-friendly initiatives, or raising awareness about the impact of climate change, my efforts extend beyond the pageant stage to create a lasting impact on the environment.
In essence, I firmly believe that being a beauty queen is not merely about donning a crown and sash; it’s a responsibility to use the platform to be a voice for the voiceless and effect positive change. My commitment is unwavering, and I will use my title as Miss Elite Africa to continue my activism and make a tangible and lasting impact on the issues that resonate most with me and my community. By exemplifying the true essence of beauty beyond appearances, I aim to inspire others to recognize the potential for positive change within the realm of beauty pageants.
